Oil City ~ Southside Neighborhood Association

May 2008
History

The Southside Neighborhood Association began meeting in July of 2007. Official by-laws
were approved in February of 2008 and elections were held at the ~march 2008 meeting.

Regularly scheduled meetings of the Southside Neighborhood  Association are held on the
4th Tuesday of the Month at 6:30 PM at the Free Methodist Church on Wilson Avenue in Oil City.

From July 2007 through March 2009, a group of appointed Core Committee members have been working to organize the group including working on event planning; forming the mission,
purpose, and goals; and leading the meeting .

      MISSION

The mission of the Southside Neighborhood Association is to build
our neighborhoods into safer, friendlier and more caring
places to live.  We are committed to looking out for each other.

                Safe-House/Neighborhood Watch

One of the first things that the Southside Association decided to renew the Safe House program
by expanding it to include any person in need. Safe House is way for neighbors to help out
neighbors in need.

After an application and training process, a Safe House applicant will be a certified Safe House
and will be given the official  Safe House sign to place in their Window …

A person in crisis can come to a Safe House for assistance. Safe Home participants act as a
conduit between the person in crisis and the police.

As of March 2008, there are 12 trained Safe House participants and another training class will
be forming soon.

                   Youth Initiative

Since the inception of the  Southside Neighborhood
Association, we have believed that. the youth of our community are important to our neighborhoods and that we can't afford to lose them to drugs, alcohol, violence, or to dropping out of school. We want to engage the youth for their benefit as well
as for the good of our community.

                       814 Initiative Update

The 814 Initiative' s first event on April 12, 2008 was a great success. 98 businesses, organizations and individuals sponsored or volunteered during the event. We were impressed and overwhelmed by this positive response from our community.

Over 100 youth and adults attended. The teens had a great evening of music, dancing, food and fun, but our main goal was to engage them for their benefit as well as for the good of our community.

We talked about how teens and adults can work together to have a positive impact on our future.

The teens voiced many good ideas to the questions we asked. Our next step is to share their
great ideas with the school district, the city and area
organizations. We hope to find ways to implement some of the ideas as an Association and hope
to collaborate with other organizations to implement
others.

                Senior Focus,

The Southside Neighborhood Association recognizes that the senior citizens in our neighborhoods have talents, wisdom and vision that can and should be passed on to future generations. We also recognize
that they have safety and security issues that need to be addressed.

Since its inception, this committee has helped a local
Residential units that houses mostly senior citizens to increase security in the building by having a sign-in for all visitors and by installing alarm systems on all
doors. The committee has also worked at assessing other issues that the seniors of our community
have so that they can be addressed.
