(As reported in the Derrick)
By JUDITH O. ETZEL
The North Side Association along with its peer groups will participate in the event.
A community rally aimed at eradicating the illegal drug problem in Oil
City neighborhoods will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the
Central Avenue Plaza area.
"Our neighborhood associations are on a campaign to have our city free
of drugs and blighted housing. The goal is to make our city a better
place to grow our children," said Venice Lewis, president of the North
Side Association.
While the North Side group is sponsoring the second annual anti-drug
rally, its peer organizations - the Siverly and South Side Neighborhood
Associations - are joining in the campaign, Lewis said.
The afternoon event, open free to the public, will feature speakers,
informational exhibits, hot dogs and soft drinks and entertainment.
The Rev. Eric Reamer of Oil City will offer the invocation. Randy
Seitz, president and chief operating officer of the Oil Region Alliance
of Business, Industry and Tourism will provide the opening remarks.
Other speakers will be Venango County Commissioner Jan Beichner, state
Rep. Scott Hutchinson, Oil City Mayor Sonja Hawkins and Oil City
Council member Lee Mehlburger.
Entertainment will be provided by the Franklin School of Kung Fu, a
magician, the Oiler Marching Band and others. Representatives of the
Family Services and Children's Aid Society in Oil City and the county's
substance abuse office will offer remarks and provide educational
information.
The Central Avenue plaza area in front of the library will be closed to vehicular traffic.
In the event of rain, the rally will be moved into the Oil City YMCA.
"The source of this rally is to have the dealers and users who traffic
drugs in our city know that we are watching them and they are not
welcome here," Lewis said.
